Glasgow by-election confusion

November 3, 2009 by

David_KerrLabour is having great fun teasing SNP candidate David Kerr about his apparent confusion as to where he was born: in 2000 and 2001 he claimed to be from Cumbernauld; now he’s telling voters in the Glasgow North-East by-election he’s from Dennistown.

Labour shouldn’t be so smug. Back in 1999 I interviewed (as a student journalist) its candidate in the North-East Scotland by-election for the European Parliament, Kathleen Walker Shaw, and she told me that she was from Aberdeen (other reports said she claimed to be Scottish), when in fact she had been born in Wordsley, Staffordshire. Her opponents went to town and following a pretty disastrous Labour campaign she came third behind the SNP and Tory candidates.
