Michael Ancram to stand down

_46189231__45766170_aancram226cr_pa-1The BBC is reporting that the Scots-born Conservative MP and former Scottish Office minister Michael Ancram is to stand down from Parliament at the next general election. Ill health is his stated reason, having had a heart problem for the past six years. Ancram was MP for Berwickshire and East Lothian from February 1974 until he lost the seat in the election of October the same year. He then represented Edinburgh South from 1979 until he was again defeated in 1987. As well as serving at the Scottish Office, Ancram was also chairman of the Scottish Conservative Party in the early 1980s.
